A Biblical Basis for Going Vegetarian

A Biblical Basis for Going Vegetarian

When I was in high school, I really felt called to be a vegetarian. During that time, I was in the best shape of my life and I felt amazing! I worked out constantly, was a very athletic cheerleader and was full of energy. Here’s the thing though – when I was a vegetarian, I really didn’t do it well. I didn’t really have much money to food shop with, so I just kind of just lived off salads and vegetarian snacks. Not really the best “vegetarian ways”. I had a friend who noticed this, who eventually convinced me that this was not really the right lifestyle for me, and then ended my vegetarian lifestyle.

Before my most recent move from Philadelphia, I went to visit my friend Abby, who happens to be a vegetarian, as well as a Mormon. She and I get along incredibly well, and I trust her opinion. I picked her brain a bit about why she’s a vegetarian and what inspired her to be one. Abby explained that there are a lot of scriptures referencing what we eat and refer negatively to consuming meat.

I am a hardcore researcher and planner; always have been and probably always will be.

So, because of that and my curiosity being peaked, I naturally had to research this topic extensively! I asked the missionaries about it. I searched the scriptures and prayed about it. What I found was super interesting.

I found that when many of the scriptures refer to “a meat offering” or “a meat feast”, it usually means wheat or grains. Additionally, I found in the King James version of the Bible, that whenever the word “meat” is referenced, it doesn’t mean meat. Instead when you see the word “flesh”, it refers to animals. This was confusing to me and I had a hard time understanding the meaning at first. I understand the importance of course of being healthy and nourishing our bodies, but still didn’t have a full understanding of the meaning of these scriptures yet.

All of this research brought up many thoughts for me as well. First, I really tend to think that there’s a reason why our bodies don’t process red meat that well. Dairy products as well. Second, through research, I’ve found that our bodies are not supposed to be able to naturally process a cow’s milk. If your body is easily able to process a cow’s milk, then your body has genetically mutated to adapt. But, even with that being so, many people are still lactose intolerant.

Thirdly, let’s think back to Adam and Eve for a second. Adam and Eve had to hunt and gather for their food. So, from an eternal perspective and up to recently, humans had to hunt and gather their food. People were designed to go out and physically collect their food. Meat was not always available. We can go days without it; our bodies are kind of designed for that.

Ya’ll, there a lot of serious and tough scriptures out there referring to the killing of animals for food. Some scriptures even called it an “Abomination”, meaning something unclean. What it boils down to is this – there aren’t a lot of positive words regarding this subject.  Basically, eat meat very sparingly to put it positively.

Basically, what I’m saying is that I am now aligning the way that I consume food with the scriptures and the way our bodies were designed by God. Until speaking with my friend Abbey and hearing her thoughts, I would never even have considered this again. I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject, so feel free to drop a comment below. I love to read your comments and I can’t wait to see what you have to say about this!

Below you’ll find a downloadable informative PDF containing a list of scriptural references that refer to the eating of animals, the definition of the word meat and so much more!

Looking at life with my eternal partner

Looking at life with my eternal partner

Woah. Okay so I guess it’s been almost 3 weeks since I was sealed for time and all eternity to the love of my life.

We’ve been married for almost two years so why was this different? I’m hoping I can

County Clerk wedding

saying “I Do” for the first time

explain the difference with the respect it deserves.

So, before we were simply that, married. We eloped in a county clerk’s office during my lunch (because my boss wouldn’t give me the day to get married!). Like most marriages in the beginning it was exciting but not without problems. Things really do change after you get married. We were combining everything, bank accounts, cell phone plans, etc. Things just become different. Things that didn’t bother you while you were dating can become huge fights when you’re married. Don’t think we spent a lot of time “compromising.” It was so much excitement and love and happiness.

Now that’s it has been two years, there’s a lot less compromise and a lot more love and excitement.

Being sealed in the temple was a totally different experience. Both ceremonies we had both civil and temple were beautiful in their own right. However, this sealing was different. I got to promise Alex FOREVER. Not just until death but forever.

About to start our eternal family

About to start our eternal family

So when I was 10, my family moved, same town just a different street. I had grown up on a

My wonderful husband and neighbors

pretty busy road and so there wasn’t really a neighborhood and I couldn’t really just hang out with friends in the area. So when we moved I was super excited to be in a neighborhood. I found the first house that had bikes in the front yard and I just went ahead and introduced myself. There was always something so special about this large family down the street. I could just tell they were different from mine. They had so much love and happiness. There was a family of 7 and the mom was always involved. She was at every sporting event, recital, club activity, etc. My family was in the midst of divorce so I wanted to spend all my time with this special family. They had something I wanted.

I went to so many activities with them growing up. I had no idea I was really going to Young Women’s activities. I just knew they belonged to a church and I enjoyed being there. I loved that my neighbors kept me included without crossing my mom’s lines. She was never into religion and I am so grateful my neighbors respected that boundary of my mom’s. I think without that, I wouldn’t be here.

Together We Can Make a Difference

Together We Can Make a Difference

I recently embarked in a new business venture, Christian Bling. It’s a faith-based company that allows me to work from home.

Christian Bling offers opportunities to raise money for worthy causes, custom create pieces for foundations, and have faith inspired hosted or online gatherings that are hosted at parishes, schools or homes through distribution of their faith inspired, meaningful gift line of 200 items!

Alex and I have become so blessed by finding our faith. The happiness it has brought our home has been immeasurable. One of the best ways I can think to show my love of the Savior and our Heavenly Father is by wearing his love. That’s what I love about Christian Bling, it gives me an opportunity to share my faith in a way that I wouldn’t have been able to do before. I always get compliments on my jewelry and that leads to a conversation about God, what could be a bigger blessing?! Not only do they offer jewelry but they are so supportive of the military, which you know I’m huge on! They offer apparel, home decor, things for the guys in our lives, and so much more! Christian Bling is without a doubt one of my top 5 best decisions I’ve ever made, the first two being joining my church and marrying Alex <3

I want to ask you which organizations you care about? I want to help you help them. Send me an email (wearhislove@gmail.com) so we can start raising money for your favorite charity.

Together, we can make a difference.

For Time and All Eternity

For Time and All Eternity

I know I’ve taken a hiatus but it has been insane around here, my sincerest apologies.

Alex is finally (almost) out of the Army. We signed the paperwork so I can taste the freedom coming our way.

Anyway, I wanted to share this amazing story with you all.

For those of you who are not members of my church, a temple marriage may seen foreign to you.

In my church, we believe families can be together forever. I think this principle is one of the main reasons I joined the church. I think it such a huge blessing that I know without a doubt I’ll be with my husband and any children we have for time and all eternity.

So we become sealed to our families in the temples. I’ve been eagerly awaiting our time to go to the temple.

Until It Happened To You…Rape Culture in America

Until It Happened To You…Rape Culture in America

I was never going to write about this. It was far too personal for me. However, I feel like it would be a huge disservice to not discuss it in light of recent media coverage.

Let’s start with this is not a pity me piece. I’m not asking for some form of personal attention. Now that’s out of the way, we can discuss this massive problem.

According to Marshall University, Rape Culture is

“an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture.”

I’m gong to start with my own story to talk about this issue.

My freshman year of college, I was super excited. I was going to my dream school. I hadn’t even applied to other schools. My mom was so nervous. I go down for orientation. Meet a cute boy. He’s on the football team and he’s southern. I mean that’s what a girl from the north wants in a man when she goes down south. We talked that whole summer until I moved into the dorm. I think my mom had been back in NJ for 24 hours max when I called her from my roommates cellphone to tell her I had been raped and the police had taken my cellphone as evidence. Not only did they take my cellphone but basically all of my possessions. Being the amazing mom she is, she left work and drove back to South Carolina. Thanks mom.
